back

friend

I kept driving and the curtain of rain rolled back
revealing the hot, clear light again
i was filled with the scent of wet earth
still pools steaming and leaves sweating

ahead, a twisted mass of fur and flesh lay in the road
it cried out to me in a terrible, shrivelled voice
it spoke of a world of pain
like stabbing the earth with a silver sword
"LOOK," it screamed to me
bone shards and bloody sinews glinting
"YOU DID THIS TO ME."

I could not heed the hateful thing
I could not swerve in time
I dealt the final blow
